The Regional Office of the Reserve Bank of India started functioning in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh from July 02, 2007 as a Sub-office of Chandigarh Office. It was started with Rural Planning and Credit Department. The office was upgraded as an Independent Unit from November 01, 2012. Subsequently it got expanded and added many other departments viz., Govt. Banking Division (GBD), Dept. of Supervision (DOS), Consumer Education and Protection Cell, Market Intelligence Cell, etc.
Currently, Shimla Regional Office oversees banking and financial activities in the State, which mainly includes financial inclusion and development, redressal of complaints related to banking services, supervision of Urban Cooperative Banks, regulatory function of Rural Cooperative Banks, Regional Rural Banks and State Government banking business.
The Regional Office is functioning from a leased accommodation located at SDA Complex, Kasumpti, Shimla.
